Meet the Founder
Kaimaya Johnson is a trailblazer, changemaker, and passionate advocate for marginalized youth. She made United States history as the first openly transgender woman to work for a major metropolitan transit company, breaking barriers and opening doors for others to follow.
Kaimaya’s journey has been anything but easy. Homeless by the age of 15 and with no support from her family, she faced the harsh realities of survival, which led to sex work and eventually incarceration for 11 years. But even in the darkest moments, she held onto her resilience and vision for a better future.
After her release, Kaimaya courageously began her gender transition and built a successful career—proving that determination and self-belief can rewrite any story. Her historic achievement in the transit industry not only represents personal triumph but also creates a pathway for inclusion and opportunity for others.
Motivated by her own lived experiences, Kaimaya founded Project Safe House—a nonprofit dedicated to providing transitional housing, job resources, comprehensive sex education, and college application support for LGBTQIA youth ages 15–24 experiencing homelessness. Her mission goes beyond shelter; it’s about empowerment, community, and creating a foundation for long-term success.
Kaimaya’s leadership is rooted in empathy, accountability, and action. She has turned her story of hardship into a platform for hope—proving that with support, stability, and opportunity, every young person can rise above their circumstances and thrive.
